Nebraska Public Power District Exploring Nuclear Power Options in 16 Communities
Phase 2 of Feasibility Study Underway
The Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) is moving forward with its exploration of nuclear power as a potential energy source for the state. The district has reached Phase 2 of a feasibility study, which will assess 16 communities for their suitability to host a nuclear power plant.
Sites Under Evaluation
The communities under consideration include:
- Grand Island
- Hastings
- Kearney
- Wauneta
- Other locations throughout Nebraska
The study will evaluate factors such as the availability of water, land, and infrastructure, as well as the potential environmental and economic impacts of a nuclear power plant.
Potential Benefits
If a suitable site is identified, a nuclear power plant could provide several benefits for Nebraska, including:
- Clean, reliable energy
- Reduced carbon emissions
- Economic development and job creation
The study is expected to conclude in 2024, at which point NPPD will decide whether to proceed with a full-scale nuclear power project.
