WSG Tirol and Austria Wien Settle for a 2-2 Draw
Three penalties shape low-scoring match
Vienna, Austria - April 20, 2024 -
WSG Tirol and Austria Wien played out a 2-2 draw in a match marked by three penalty decisions. The match at Generali Arena in Vienna was low on chances for both sides.
Daniel Fitz converted two penalty kicks for the visitors, in the 41st and 88th minutes. Austria Wien equalized both times, with a penalty of their own from Dominik Prokop in the 65th minute and a goal from Benedikt Pichler in the 75th minute.
The three penalties were the result of clumsy challenges in the box. WSG Tirol's first penalty came after Austria Wien goalkeeper Patrick Pentz brought down Florian Rieder. Fitz stepped up to take the spot-kick and calmly slotted it home.
Austria Wien's penalty came after WSG Tirol defender David Jauernig handled the ball in the area. Prokop took the penalty and sent goalkeeper Ferdinand Oswald the wrong way.
WSG Tirol restored their lead in the 88th minute when Fitz converted another penalty, this time after Austria Wien defender Lucas Schollbach fouled Rieder.
However, Austria Wien refused to give up and found an equalizer in the dying minutes. Pichler's goal from close range earned his team a share of the points.
The draw leaves Austria Wien in third place in the Austrian Bundesliga, while WSG Tirol remains in 12th place.
